Friday 25 September: Cairns - Skyrail and Kuranda Train
Today we started our exploration of the tropical rainforest with a ride on The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway up to Kuranda. After a picnic lunch by the river we then rode back down on The Kuranda Scenic Railway.
Travelling on the Skyrail over the canopy of the rainforest was fun, but the most specacular bit was when you actually get down onto the floor of the rainforest and are surrounded by all these towering trees and creepers, and hear the bird calls. It is teeming with life and feels quite primeval.
We took the scenic railway on the way down. An amazing feat of engineering which passes through 15 tunnels and hugs the edge of the hills.
Tonight we stayed in a very basic (but clean and tidy) campsite for the night, so no power or lights.
Golden Nugget: Need somewhere to park - or do you have a driveway you don't use?
Now this is a brilliant idea that I have used several times. Simply pay someone to park on their driveway. It is cheaper than a car park, you can book in advance and often you can find somewhere just a 100 metres from where you need to be. Brilliant. Check out Just Park. I've used it in Manchester, Sheffield, London and Toronto - and each time it worked well and took the stress out of having to find a parking space. And it works the other way too - if you live in the right place and have a spare bit of driveway it is instant income.
