Saturday 03 October: Undara to Cobbold Gorge

Before leaving Undara this morning we took an hour or so for a short walk up to and around the rim of an old volcano in the area (a very small one!).

The first things we saw was a pair of Cookaburras:

It was Kalkani crater we walked around:

Then it was back on the road again further still into the outback, to find Cobbold Gorge. This gorge was only discovered in 1991 and is a little way off the beaten track (and required another 100kms or so dirt track driving).

We arrived in time for a late picnic lunch and finished that off with a dip in the infinity swimming pool which was very welcome after all that dust!

After a swim and a relax we went for a walk to Russell's Lookout above the campsite:

It is very dry here but somehow some of the trees manage to survive. The average normal rainfall here is not very high, but over the last 3 years they have had less than half the normal rainfall and it is beginning to affect the vegetation.
