Sunday 18 October: Up the west coast of the South Island

We continued up the west coast of the island in not the best weather, a rough looking sea!

A rough west coast view

At Punaikaki we explored another cave or two before heading for the pancake rocks. These rocks are supposed to make a huge booming sound around high tide. We were there about an hour before high tide and missed the booming - but the rocks were quite impressive anyway!

Here we are exploring caves yet again!

And here are the pancake rocks (they are layered like a stack of pancakes).

Then we went to Cape Foulwind to see a seal colony at the end of a short walk along the coastal path.

Then further north we did yet another walk. This time up Charming Creek Walkway which follows an ancient disused gold-mine railway line. Really quite spectacular.

In places the line goes through tunnels in the rock - all hewn by hand.

You can't see it but there is a little stream of water running down the rock just beside Sue. Here's a picture of a scene with Sue and then another picture taken in the same place without Sue but with a rainbow!

We camped at Gentle Annie's Cowshed! Here's the view just before bedtime:
