Monday 12 October: Tunnel Beach & Waipahatu loop walk
We started the day in the Catlins, exploring a super beach that can only be accessed through a tunnel.
Before moving on we paused for a coffee and a snack ...
Then it rained!
On the route we stopped to see the Matai falls and Horseshoe falls.
Our destination was the three hour Waipohatu waterfall loop walk (which we did in 2hrs 5 mins - we hurried, it was raining!). This walk takes you to two waterfalls in the middle of a very dense forest. No other way of getting there other than battling through the thick undergrowth!
The route was blocked at one point by an enormous fallen tree. It took us a good five minutes to climb round the tree and manage to find the path again.
We then headed for Curio Bay to see a few petrified bits of wood (tree stumps and trunks) on the sea shore. A bit disappointing really. After that we headed for Invercargill where we stayed for the night.
