Tuesday 13 October: Clifden Cave walk & Manapouri
Went shopping in the morning to stock the larder. Stopped at Riverton to admire the view. Then found "Cozy Nook", the few cottages that remain of a traditional Maori fishing village.
Then we headed for Clifden Caves. An "off the beaten track" attraction for the adventurous. We took our torches and crawled our way underground to explore the caves. From entrance to exit of these caves is about 300 meters on the surface, but more like 1.5 kilometers underground. We only managed to get about two thirds of the way through before having to turn round and go back because we didn't fancy swimming through the underground pool that blocked our path!
After that we headed for Manapouri where we did a walk (1 hour each way) through the forest to Lake Manapouri Lake. A particular interest on this walk was another LOTR filming site - the river was used as part of the Andouin river in the film.
Tonight we stayed at Possum Lodge campsite on the shores of Lake Manapouri.
