Monday 19 October: Across the island to Picton
Got up late this morning, 8.15!
Showery weather, not the best. Set off East across the island up the Buller valley. Stopped for a walk at the Buller Gorge Swing bridge which, at 110m, claims to be the longest in NZ.
Like many others, this area was a gold-miners community. Here is Sue at the top of the shaft to a real (but worked out) gold mine and then outside a gold-miner's cottage.
We took the scenic route to Picton and had Fish (Shark) and Chips for dinner. View of Picton harbour from where we catch the ferry tomorrow morning:
View of dinner menu!
Used a free camp site just outside the town for the night (along with all the other people aiming to catch the early morning ferry).
