Tuesday 27 October: Cape Reinga, Ninety-Mile Beach and Sand surfing
Justa short drive this morning to Kaitaia where we hopped on a coach for a tour of the north of the island. We headed up to Cape Reinga stopping for a quick look round a gum diggers museum and a place doing Kauri wood carving. The wook they use has lain buried for 1000s of years.
Lunch was included in our package: chicken, gammon and chips at a roadside cafe.
Then on to Cape Reinga (nearly but not quite the northernmost point on the island) for an explore and some photos.
On the return journey the bus drove 73kms down Ninety-mile beach (which is nearer to 60 miles long). We stopped to ride some body boards down some sand dunes ... weeeeeeeeeeee !!!!
After the tour, we regained our car and then it was on towards the Bay of Islands. We stopped to camp at Aroha Island, another Kiwi reserve. During a late evening walk we did manage to come across a Kiwi, but could only see its leg!
